5 Things Every Businesswoman Should Think About

Posted by Laura Dunn on Aug 18, 2014

Laura_DunnAs many of you will know, starting your own business is not an easy task. Whether you run a business full-time or are thinking about starting one, all of us will have similar issues that we need to consider.

When I established LED Media, the following five things were at the top of my list to consider.

Passion – Are you passionate about your business and your industry? I live, sleep and breathe social media, so I was confident that I would be able to turn my passion into a business. If you don’t think your passion will stand the test of time, urgently reconsider what you want your business to be about.

Experience – Your experience in a particular industry or field is one of the most important factors when becoming an entrepreneur. Clients look to this as an indicator of your successes (and failures), as well as if a particular professional path is being created. With experience in both the public and private sectors, I felt that I had a solid amount of experience to start my new venture.

Confidence– Do you have the confidence to win clients, earn trust and gain a reputation in your field? Confidence is such an important thing for a businesswoman to consider. All of us experience nerves before a big meeting or feel fear when something is going wrong. Having the confidence and vision to succeed is one characteristic that must be in place right from the start of your entrepreneurial journey.

Work – life balance
– This is the one thing that always suffers when you embark on a new venture. Even though I try my hardest to schedule in time at the gym, a run around the neighborhood or time just to switch off, work (and the computer) always creep back in.

Support Base
– Do you have a strong support base that can help you out? Family and friends are crucial. I am fortunate to have supportive parents and friends, whose advice and patience have been invaluable. Without this support, I would not be where I am today.

Whether you are starting a franchise with Sylvan or working on a new business idea, these five characteristics are important for you to consider. Are there any other factors that you would add to the mix?
