How to be productive

Posted by Laura Dunn on Nov 25, 2015

In a world of constant distractions, it’s easy to stray from your to-do list and find your attention ending up elsewhere!

In fact, as I write this post my phone is constantly beeping with notifications and my inbox is filling up with emails that need my attention.

Running a business or a franchise is completely time-consuming, and without a few tips and tricks, I wouldn’t be able to keep a handle on all the things I need to do!

Here’s how I remain productive:

Set a schedule: a schedule is everything. My iCal lets me keep track of where I need to be, what meetings are planned and when I need to prepare for a conference call. I’ve gotten into the habit of putting everything in the schedule, helping me to make sure I don’t miss anything.

Meetings at lunchtime: scheduling meetings in the middle of the day somehow works better for me – I feel like I can get tasks done in the morning and head back to the to-do list in the afternoon. It’s a good balance for me, and encourages me to step away from the computer for some face-to-face interaction!

Lists: I’m never without a list, and I refresh it at the end of each day. I make sure basic everyday tasks are included because otherwise they would completely slip my mind!

Regular breaks: a change of scenery is healthy and taking regular breaks is an important part of recharging my efforts to achieve total productivity. Stepping away from my desk and heading outside for fresh air helps to refocus my mind and enables me to feel focused for the next task on my to do list.

Keep it clean: I can’t work when I’m surrounded by a mass of papers, dirty cups or general junk. This totally stifles any productive vibes I might be feeling, so a daily clean of my desk and workspace always takes place at the end of the day. The saying ‘tidy desk, tidy mind’ definitely rings true for me!
