One of our Sylvan franchisees looks to expand her business throughout the Louisville, KY area. Most of our franchisees follow a similar expansion strategy (here's a list of available Sylvan territories). Check out this great feature that was published in the Louisville Business First.
Alicia Miller, franchisee for Columbus, Ohio-based Sylvan, said she plans to have at least two new locations open by the end of 2015. She said she is actively scouting locations, but has yet to make an offer on a site.
"Louisville is a key expansion market for me," she said. "I think it's a market that will continue to grow."
Miller currently owns Sylvan locations at 5150 Charlestown Road in New Albany and 6506 Bardstown Road, in Fern Creek.
She said one of the new locations will be in the East End, and the other will be between downtown and her Fern Creek center. For competitive reasons, she declined to disclose specifically where she plans to open the sites.
In all, Miller owns 15 Sylvan locations in Ohio, Kentucky and Indiana, with three additional locations planned in central Ohio.
Miller would not disclose the investment required to open the two planned Louisville locations, but she said Sylvan advises franchisees that the initial investment to open a new center ranges from about $159,000 to $280,000.
Each new location will employ a center director and a full-time or part-time director of education, depending on demand. The tutors at the centers are state-certified teachers who work for Sylvan part-time, and the number again is determined by demand at each location.
Miller explained the additional locations are important because they will be more convenient for parents in those parts of the city.
"It gives you a much more flexible model to reach your student base," Miller said. "The key is parents are busy, and you really need to have coverage within driving distance of them."
She added that because Sylvan's lessons are delivered on iPads, parents can easily track progress and it allows the company to open satellite and pop-up locations.
