Top Tips for Effective Teleconferencing

Posted by Laura Dunn on Oct 28, 2014

Working with clients both in the US and the UK, I take part in teleconferences several times a week. Whether you use Skype, FaceTime or other software, it’s always important to think about how best to present yourself and your business during and after the call.

Here are some of my top tips for an effective teleconference call:

Have a written list of goals- Sketch out what you want to achieve during the call. Don’t be afraid to refer back to your list to make sure you covered your points or questions during the call.

Dress like you’re meeting in person- As tempting as it may be to wear your comfiest pair of pajamas, dress appropriately for the call. Not only does this cast a good impression, I have found that it makes you focused and ready to discuss items on the agenda.

Speak with a smile- If you take a lot of voice calls, speaking with a smile gives your voice a lift and helps to make the call a positive one!

List follow up goals- Keep a pen and paper handy during the call to list any key points or action items that you need to follow up with after the call has ended.

Send an email immediately following the call- I always ensure that I send an email following the call, thanking the person for their time and confirming any points that need to be followed up on or plan the date of our next call.
