Women’s History Month: 4 inspiring female businesswomen

Posted by Laura Dunn on Mar 23, 2016

This month marks Women’s History Month, and the opportunity to recognize the achievements of women in every walk of life.

Women are making fantastic achievements in every walk of life, and particularly in the areas of business and commerce. About 29% of America’s business owners are women, an increase of 26% since 2007. The number of female owned firms has risen by 68% since 2007, compared to 47% for all businesses.

Here are 4 female businesswomen who inspire me:

Tory Burch: Burch started her business with the iconic Reva ballet flat. Twelve years on, Burch heads up a billion dollar business that is globally expanding on a rapid scale. In 2015, Burch launched a fellows competition offering female entrepreneurs a chance to compete for business education grants and mentoring.

Arianna Huffington: media mogul and the brains behind The Huffington Post, Arianna Huffington is a powerhouse for all things digital. She is also a keen promoter of an effective work-life balance.

Sallie Krawcheck: Krawcheck was one of the most senior women on Wall Street, working for institutions including Citigroup and Bank of America. She left this corporate world to found the Ellevate Network, and this year will be launching Ellevest, a digital investment platform for women.

Melinda Gates: as one of the world’s most prominent philanthropists, Melinda Gates does not stand as the shadow behind her successful husband, Bill Gates. As a founder of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, she works towards enhancing access to universal healthcare and the reduction of extreme poverty across the word. The Foundation had an endowment of $44.3 billion at the end of 2014.
